Group II Pinto's?
« on: June 09, 2003, 02:57:20 AM »
Does anyone have any information on Group II Pinto's?  My friend had one a few years ago.  Instead of it having Pinto emblems on the fenders, there was a rectangular emblem which said Group II.  The car had a lot of nice parts like 15" centerline wheels and Pro-car racing buckets but the body was rusty.  He ended up buying the 73, which I currently own, and tranfering all the good parts to it since the body was in nicer shape.  I still have some of the Group II parts on my 73.  Just curious if someone could shed some light on them?

This sounds like someone had modified the car and stuck on the emblem's to identify his car. I dont believe Ford ever had this option and I have not ever heard of a "dealer prepped" option like this. I have, however , seen cars that have had different emblems put on them like the 2.3 and turbo off mustangs and etc. Could be that this was the case.

I don't think so.  Here are some pictures of a full length Pinto console I picked up a week ago at a swapmeet.  It has the same Group II emblem that was on the my friends car.  THe car was gold with a black racing stripe, simular to the Starsky & Hutch car.  That is all I know.  I was hoping someone else would chime in.

Well, All I have to say is. I dont think that is a factory Pinto. Some dealers were known to " spice up" some of their cars buy adding " non dealer options". That is probably what that is. Also, that clock  is not a "Pinto" clock, looks lkie it came out of an LTD or the likes.

Hi Guy's,

I think this Group II Pinto (since it was black W/ gold striping)  was a special Pittsburgh dealer prepped car.  I seem to recall one for sale on ebay a couple months ago.  ???  Can anyone else shed some light on this?

I realize this is an aftermarket console and not an original Ford part. テつ This is the second time I have seen these emblems on a Pinto part so some one must have done some sort of kit?

My friends car was gold with a black stripe. テつ It appeard to be an Oregon car from the early 70's as the Oregon license plates were from that era. テつ The history of the car was unknown. テつ His childhood friend's older brother bought the car from somewhere in the early 80's. テつ The 3 sold the car to each other thru the years till about 97 when it was vadalized. テつ Some kids busted all the windows and jumped on the roof and hood damaging the whole body. テつ My friend's friend sold the car to a racer who was going to use it for parts. テつ Luckly almost all the good parts were removed by my friend prior to him selling him back the car. テつ

I recently purchased Super Stock magazine off Ebay dated July 71.  It has some pictures of stage II Pinto's.  It also has stage I and III.  They were manufactured in a dealership called Norris Ford Inc. of Dundalk, Baltimore, Maryland.  Maybe if you contact them........th ey might be able to tell you if a Stage II Pinto is the same as a Type II Pinto ??

I won this flyer off Ebay this past weekend.  The company that made the kit was called Autosport Products Inc.  The kit consisted of the sport stripe, deep dish wheels, sport muffler, hood pins, fender badges, center console, leather wheel cover, walnut shift knob, and dash plaque.  Sounds like it could have been dealer installed or bought over the counter.  Interesting reading though....

Pintony, here is the thread I started on this.  Just curious if you know anything about these and if you know were I can find some of these parts.  I would really like to find a set of emblems.  Wayne, my friend who owned the car, has misplaced them.  79 panel, I have a color scanner / printer now.  Send me your address and I can send you a color copy.

Hello TIGGER,
Almost everything that was posted in this subject line can be found in old magazines.
Not just Car magazines. Playboy and Field & Stream Advertised the Ford Pinto.
Do you have an Honest John's Catilog?
This company was a bit like J.C Whitney back in the day.
The console you show in your photos could be purchased through Honest John's.
Remember that in 1971 Ford sold nearly 1/2 million Pintos.
The Pinto was 1995.00 base price and Many dealerships capitolized on that fact.
With stripe and creature comfort items + go fast goodies
Many aftermarket companys jumped into the production of parts.
Do you have an Ieco catilog?
I'm pretty sure that is where you can find the Group II emblems.
From Pintony

Thanks for the info Pintony.  I do not have either catalog.  Is either company still in business?  Didn't Ieco sell VW parts?

The rear bumper with the extra hole in it for muffler cooling. That was a rare option only offered for high dollar.  ;D

Hey Tigger,
 I saw that!
 BUT the stable is FULL!!!
I really do not see much of anything that makes it special???
From Pintony

You are right, it is just a kit that Autosport Product put together for the Pinto.  It is interesting to me because I have some of the parts from a car that had the kit.

I do like the look of that console. A shame I can't find one like that. I did notice that the valve cover & timing cover are the nicest looking pieces on the whole car. The guy painted those parts but left the ugly old air cleaner housing.

Group II was a promo by the dealers. I bought my 72 new in Dallas and it came with Shelby slots and a Sperco stripe down the side. The Group II name is the orignal name of the under2 liters trans-am class in SCCA. Group I was the pony cars and Group II was the under 2.0 (later 2.5) liter class.

Yes! And no, I don't still have them! They were stick ons and went in the round file cabnet. I made a race car out if it in the mid 70's. It also came with A70-13 Polly what ever tires. Only other option was an am radio. Car really look'd good back in 72. Red with a white stripe. Its pictured in the gallery along with Racer Walsh's car. I raced it from mid 70's till 95.
