Your Project / Re: Pinto Powered Mustang Roadster
« Last post by rob289c on Today at 04:03:55 PM »
I only made a small amount of progress this weekend.  I sprayed the remaining corroded areas of the taillight housings with rust converter, then primer.  Then I spread tiger hair over the repaired area.  I haven't sanded it smooth yet.  Once I do, they will get another treatment of primer, then silver paint.  I ordered and received the taillight assembly gaskets so once the housings are in paint, I can reassemble them.  I bought more cushion clamps and speaker wire so I can get all the rear wiring properly run and secured.  While the interior panels are off I need to swap rear window channels from side to side.  I found a resource that identifies why my rear windows don't go all the way down: the channels are currently on the wrong side.  Hopefully swapping them will correct the full travel issue.  In the near future I need to replace the valve stem seals and install the valve cover, then install the front grill assembly, front bumper, and headlights.  Then I can reinstall the engine compartment wiring harness, and install the dash and dash pad.  That will allow me to connect all the wiring harnesses.  If I can get that done I will feel like I made good progress, although I didn't get to hear it run or drive it.

My excuse for not doing more is that our first grandchild was born yesterday.  Our daughter was induced and has been at the hospital since Thursday AM.  I had to take my wife there and back several times and I wasn't able to get too deep into any of my projects.

I will be travelling for work again this week but should be back at it next weekend.

Happy Veterans Day to all those that served.  Thank you for serving...

A few more pics. The high pressure external fuel pump (don't like the location but there are limitations) Getting the T-5 clutch cable over the crossmember. Tight clearance at the starter to steering rack clamp. The pathway to the VAM that is located in the inner fender. You might also check out 65SHELBYCLONE who is on here at times as well. His set up is not the stock parts transfer that I did and depending upon your path might be helpful.

Yep, I'm one of the few still here. I check in most, but not every day. Read the write up I did (a link to part 2 is at the end of part 1). It is more entailed than most think especially with an early Pinto and an 87-88 engine. Also search my posts as there are pictures regarding such things as the inner fender mods to clear the turbo (and fix the rotted battery tray area at the same time). As well, the mods to the radiator cradle to go from the 17" to 20" radiator. With the four pic limit I'll try and put the most relevant "start point" images here. Everything is "feeler gage" tight. Maybe a 3/16"" at the radiator with no fan (I used a pusher - electric). Very little clearance at the rack and the starter bearing nub, and the stock intercooler needs to be clipped, or it hits the hood. But if you are going to do it, it has to start somewhere.

Here is part one of a thread that matches your interests.  The author is a frequent contributor here and probably available for questions.

Glad that you are going to strip the car of any parts that you can reuse. That's so much better than letting the whole car go to the crusher.

Even though the insurance company totaled the car out, can you flatbed it home and strip off any usable parts? We had a 1985 Jeep Grand Wagoneer that was totaled out because it was sideswiped  and the door column was severely bent. We were able to negotiate to keep the car by agreeing that it could never be repaired and put back on the road. An old friend had the same Jeep and used ours as a donor vehicle to keep his repaired. We felt that at least parts of "Old White" kept another boat towing vehicle running.
