thoughts/opinions
PintoMan1:
I would like to get some thoughts and opinions on maybe bypassing the heater core. what are the pros and cons of doing this? I do not drive the car in the winter, so no heater needed. But what are the pros and cons of running like this in the summer? Thanks!
Wittsend:
Most of the time when this is asked it is because the core is leaking. The two negatives I can see is IF the car got hot in the summer you would not have the brief advantage of flowing the coolant through the core. I say brief because in theory it should be cooler than the hot coolant temperature, but shortly after mixing that advantage will be lost. I doubt the actual cooling capacity of the core itself contributes much to engine cooling and remember all that heat would be going into the drivers compartment! The other negative is dealing with condensation on the interior glass. That would be dependent upon your climate.

Thanks for your input. I'm not sure if the core is even bad or not, just got it out and haven't had it checked yet. I did have a very small leak and I do mean small leak after running. Temperature gauge never got hot or over heated. I did notice on the hose coming from the core neck coming from or going to the carb was a little wet. I'm thinking (until I can have the core tested) that the hose is bad (at the clamp). Of course, it has been 19 years since I had it flushed, cleaned and repaired (only have 3,100 miles on it). I live here in Pa. I don't drive it at all in the winter (other than starting once a month to keep things in check). I mostly drive it in the summer months (and that depends on the weather).

i had a 55 chevy built for sale in the south that did not come with a heater .. your car will not know the difference ..

Thanks! I read that it could cause over heating if I was to run without it. In that case, would it be beneficial to add an electric fan to help in cooling?
